The process of extracting eggs from a stimulated ovary in a woman undergoing IVF is referred to as oocyte retrieval.

Initially done laparoscopically, it is now a fairly simple procedure done under ultrasound guidance under mild sedation, wherein a needle is inserted through the vagina and eggs re aspirated from the ovarian follicles.

It has a very low complication rate, is a quick procedure as well as no incision or cut is required.
